Sputnik - 2016/17 - Mrs Jones, Mrs Hill, Mr McHague

Google Expeditions -

We had the chance to use the app 'Google Expeditons' to explore the virtual world and become really envolved in a scene. We visited Ancient Greece, the Great Wall of China and outer space.

Wellbeing -

We nhave done a lot of work as a school recently which has focussed on our wellbeing. Part of this is considering how full our bucket is, and ways to fill someone else's bucket. Every morning in Sputnik we show how full our bucket is, and then if anyone is having a bad day we know who we can try extra hard to make feel better.

We have some bucket filling super stars in Sputnik!

Science Week 2017

13th-17th March

We used our scientific skills to complete a range of experiments and investigations with a specific focus on setting up fair tests. We made our own 'Marvellous Medicine', cleaned coins in different liquids, investigated a rnage of chemical changes and made bread.

On Friday 17th March we went to the NEC in Birmingham, to the Big Bang Show. We saw lots of exciting things when we were there, and saw how science is used in many different ways.

Forest School -

Every Wednesday Sputnik will be going on adventures in Forest School. The children will need to have something warm to wear as they will be going out what ever the weather! The children loved their first session this week - and are looking forwards to their next adventure....

Pearly Whites!

In science we have made our own toothpaste and then compared it to a value and leading brand toothpaste. Some of us made a VERY minty toothpaste by adding just a little too much peppermint! We had a great time investigating, and our classroom smelt minty fresh afterwards!

Science -

We have looked at the digestve system and teeth in humans. Once we learned this we have explored a range of wood chains which include producers and consumers.

Is it fair?

We have been planning and carrying out a range of fair tests in science. Last week we tested different materials to see which material would best muffle loud sounds. Ask us how we made it a fair test!

IMG_0860

Word Aware -

Every week we add a new science and topic word to our word wall. We are using our word wall to build up topic specific vocabulary. Some of us have intervention using the Word Aware Intervention to help us use a wide range of words in our learning. Come and see the words that are on our word wall so far this half term.

Showing our flair for writing:

Year Four have some super examples of writing on display in the 3/4 corridor - If you have chance, pop up and have a read of it and see what makes it so good! Many parents commented on it during Parent's Evening (15th & 17th Nov)

Autumn 2 ~

We have been reading the 'Firework Maker's Daughter which was written by the author Philip Pullman. We have been immersing ourselves in the text and have found lots of language we can then use in our own writing. Lila has always wanted to be a Firework Maker - but she heads off to Mount Merapi without knowing the full peril she may be in - will she survive the River Pirates, or will the Fire-Fiend be her downfall?

Ask Year 4....I'm sure they will fill you in!!!

We still love visiting our Forest School. Unfortunatley, Storm Doris tried to squash our Forest School area, but we are enjoying being able to visit it every week with Charlotte.

IMG_1192

Sign 2 Sing -

On Thursday 9th February we held our annual sign 2 sing celebrations. As a whole school we learnt the song 'Together' and performaed this in assembly. We held a non-uniform day to raise money and in the afternoon we created posters giving advice about effective ways to communicate with a deaf person. We are proud of Ryan Mc who can confidently sign, and will regularly sign songs in our school assemblies!

Our Local Area -

As geographers we have explored our local area and have ofund out more about Kidderminster. We have used google maps to help us, and have worked in pairs to create an information page for some of the key attractions for people whi might want to visit Kidderminster. We have used the ipads to compare times and distances to different locations within Kidderminster. We are hoping to complete our topic with a short walk of our local surroundings. We are all experts in why coming to visit Kidderminster is a good thing to do! Ask us about some of the places you could visit!

IMG_0983

CountryFile!

To start the New Year with a bang, Year 4 will be reading 'Fantastic Mr Fox' by Roald Dahl. We will base all our topic work aorund the theme of the countryside (more details can be found on our newsletter at the bottom of this page!).

We will be aiming to write for different audiences and pruposes, and will hold some debates on issues that affect the countryside in Britain.

The word of the day is....

We use 'Word Wizard' to introduce new topic vocabulary - We have built up words that we have looked at the meaning of, and then used in our topic and science work.

All our words are on display in our classroom!

IMG_0917

An  eye for detail...

We enjoyed using the microscopes to make accurate and careful observations of a range of everyday items such as sugar, coins, paper etc. We had a great time talking about what we found out! Come see some of our writing about what we saw - its on display in the KS2 area upstairs!

Inspire Maths

We have started a new scheme called 'Inspire Maths' since half term.

So far we have:

Counted on in ones, tens, hundreds and thousands, Mentally added, subtracted, multiplied and divided, Compared numbers up to 10,000, and added within 10,000 by not regrouping and then by regrouping.

We enjoy this new approach to our learning because we always use the equipment to build up our concrete experiences, before moving to pictoral representations, then to abstract.

Come see one of our lessons where we will explain what we are doing to you!

It's beginning to look like Chirstmas...

Year 4 had an art workshop where they created star lamps for the lantern parade in Kidderminster town centre to turn on the local Christmas lights. They worked hard as it was a very sticky, tricky job! Well done to everyone who came to the lantern parade on the 12th on November!

Talk For Writing -

Mrs Jones has been using some of Pie Corbett's Talk for Writing techniques in our English with us. We spend quality time getting to know a text, then orally rehearse it, so we have lots of ideas before we start writing.

You might see Sputnik doing 'fun' activities such as inner/outer circle, drama, story mapping, boxing up and other activities. All these things have helped us improve our writing in all our subjects, especially English.

Ask us about some of the ways we have become familliar with the texts we have been using, and see the super work that is in our English and Topic Books!

Get out the Doods!

Year 4 have the exciting opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. We have been learning to play the 'Dood' since September. We have a weekly lesson with Mr Hill from Worcestershire Music. We are going to be reading two texts this term  - 'The Colour of Home'  by Mary Hoffman, and 'Brother Eagle, Sister Sky' by Susan Jeffers. Our science and topic work will all be based around these texts. We will be looking at different environmental regions in the world as well as exploring the impact changes have upon our envrionment.
